COSTCO WHOLESALE
Designing an E-comm Experience for a Global Market
Costco Wholesale is a membership warehouse club, dedicated to the straightforward mission of continually providing its members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices. It has grown from a single warehouse to a multi-billion dollar global retailer with 785 warehouses operating in eight countries.
Costco currently has a robust, web-based e-commerce platform, but was in need of a native app to increase performance and better serve its global customer base. I was brought on as the principal product designer to work with the internal Costco software development team and design the app from the ground up to serve customers in 10+ countries around the world.
Process Flows + Interaction Design
In order to get the app into the hands of users as quickly as possible I worked with the Costco business analyst team to identify the key flows from their website to transfer to the native app. After identifying these required flows, I documented them and made any necessary revisions to improve the user experience and reflect native app best practices.
Visual Design
Costco’s entire brand is built upon the idea of a simple, straightforward experience to ensure members get the best price for the things they need and their online products are no different. When working on the visual design for their app I wanted their brand values to come through with easy to follow user journeys, clear calls to action, and an adherence to their existing brand standards. I focused on clearing away any visual noise and employed a less is more approach to the UI design in order to keep the products in the spotlight. I took great care in using the existing pattern library as much as possible and documented any additional styles or icons I created for replication in the future.
